About Finca Olivera

I’m Alejandro Garrido, a self-taught gardener with a strong work ethic and an eye for detail. I love studying living ecosystems and applying what they teach us to gardens, to create balanced, self-sustaining and lush gardens instead of forced systems that need a lot of water. In a good permaculture system, every pruning cut, every layer of mulch and every stone placed has its purpose and its meaning.

Finca Olivera is based in Manacor, in the east of Mallorca, and works across the whole island. We do three things: we design gardens, we look after them through the year, and we prune trees and hedges and take the cuttings away.

How we work

Every job starts with looking and listening. On the first visit we read the soil, the water, the sun and the wind, and we ask what you want from your garden. We do not give prices on the spot: before we leave, we tell you the date you will receive a written quote.

Our gardens follow a few simple rules that suit Mallorca:

• Catch and keep the winter rain before thinking about irrigation.
• Build the soil with compost and with plants that fix nitrogen.
• Choose plants that cope with heat, wind and drought, and plant them in groups that help each other.
• Design for less work: a good garden needs less water and less care every year.

Pruning at the right time

We prune each tree at the time of year that suits it, following the pruning manuals published by the Govern de les Illes Balears, and we take all the cuttings away whole. You do not need to burn anything or drive to the recycling point.
